Workshops

Sex + Respect + Consent

A youth led art project focusing on women and the naturalness of their sexualities, the respect of their bodies and importance of consent. Promoting self confidence and self respect while attempting to expose and destroy the cultures of Rape, slut shaming, victim blaming and abuse.
We will be taking pictures of women in whatever clothing they feel comfortable in, either completely covered or nearly naked. We want to emphasise that a woman dressed modestly does not necessarily have any more self-respect or stricter morals than a woman who prefers to show off her body. We will be printing and framing these photos and hanging them in our installation.

Ann Denny is a youth arts engagement and community development entrepreneur based in Halifax. She recently co-founded "Youth Art Connection" a federally incorporated non-profit aimed at facilitating professional art experiences for youth in priority areas across the province. When not helping youth connect to their passions through creativity, she can be found pursuing her own creative projects, including "Anna Danova" a musical comedy alter ego on a mission to save the world from minor inconveniences, and an avant-garde indie pop group called "mother of girl" (scheduled to showcase at the Open Waters festival in January 2013). Her love of freedom of expression and of taking on tough issues through the delicate and powerful tools of artistic expression have drawn her to this conference.

Caitlin Heimpel is an engaged young woman from Halifax, Nova Scotia. She developed a passion for leadership, outdoor adventure and community building from her years at YMCA summer camps. She discovered a love of the arts at Youth-on-the-Radar, an after-school arts program in Spryfield. She now creates spoken word, collage, photography and sculpture to express herself about social issues, especially women’s equality. Caitlin shows great leadership with her peers and has already created several community art projects designed to educate and positively impact her community (e.g. “Sex/Respect/Consent”). She is currently applying for a scholarship to do a women’s studies degree at Concordia. Her dream is to use her facilitation and artistic skills to create thriving, socially aware communities across Canada.

Paige Cameron is a social media and internet expert with an eye to educating youth about how to safely navigate the world's new digital reality. She has recently given presentations to the board of education about a youth-centered approach to tackling cyber-bullying and also helped to co-create the "Sex.Respect.Consent" project with Caitlin Heimpel and Sarah Paynter. A devoted community builder, Paige is also an online entrepreneur with an online t-shirt design business and well-visited blog. Paige is interested in how woman can talk about who they are and express artistically their identity as a way of creating safe consent boundaries in their lives. Her dream is to tour the province with a series of workshops that give young men and women the tools to thrive online and socially.

Zine Making with the Anchor Archive Zine Library

Katy Curwin is a local poet and zinester originally from the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, currently living in the North End. She is an animal lover and collector of strange facts.

Shay Enxuga is a transplanted haligonian who spends most of his time making coffee, dropping out of university, and occasionally making zines. He also really likes consent.

The Bad Bad Book Club

Organized like a traditional book club, The Bad Bad Book Club meets on a monthly basis to chat about erotica. We were founded based on a desire to raise awareness of healthy, sex-positive porn available to Haligonians. We recognize that mainstream porn is often problematic, but that doesn’t mean that all porn is bad! While it may be harder to find, lots of porn embraces bodies of all types and sizes, promotes sex as pleasure, encourages safer sex, talks about consent and shows off all the fun awkwardness that is part and par
cel of so many sexual encounters. We believe that by talking openly about porn we can help people get turned on, get off, and learn more about healthy sexual experiences of all kinds.
